What are Down and Feather Pillows?

For many years there has been confusion over the words “down and feather” that are used to fill such bedding items as pillows and comforters.

Many consumers often think that they mean and respond in the same way. Nothing more can be from the truth;

Down – Is small soft fibers found underneath the feathers of birds. Down clusters as they are technically known are soft and shaped into lightweight balls enabling warm air to be trapped. Therefore, filling a pillow shell with down clusters will give softness, comfort and warmth around your head. The minus side to having a pillow filled with this organic material is it takes more down clusters to occupy the same space as a feather pillow, thus becoming more expensive to purchase.

Feathers – are flat in shape, rigid and provide a protective area for the birds down.

In addition, it gives good support and has waterproofing properties. However, feathers are unable to trap warm air in their own right. Filling a pillow shell with only feathers will provide a solid and/or stiff pillow. The fill is likely to move around and possibly over time, the feather quail will penetrate the outer casing making contact with the sleeper’s skin, thus compromising its comfort properties. However, on the plus side the feather pillows are cheaper than the down pillows.

Lets Determine the Quality of Down

The factor which determines the quality of any down filled product, in this case the pillow, is called the Fill Power. This is measured on how much one ounce of down occupies in one cubic inch of space after it has been compressed (inside a calibrated Plexiglas cylinder by its weighted piston) and then allowed to expand back to its original state. So the higher the fill power becomes, the more insulating air pockets are produced, the better the insulating ability the down clusters have. This means by using high quality down that produces high insulating properties will create less weight of down clusters that is required to keep a body warm.

Invariably when purchasing down pillows, the label/tag will indicate what the fill power is. In the retail market, these are normally divided into the following four fill powers;

500+ Fill Power – is normally of poor quality and will flatten out. It is almost certain to be duck down and will be priced at the cheaper end of the market.

600+ Fill Power – is good quality and reasonably priced. However, be careful in this range that you do not get duck down instead of goose down.

700+ Fill Power – is high quality but unfortunately the price tag increases. However, the down cluster fill will allow the pillow to breathe, creating a stable temperature. This will give the person a comfortable sleep.

800+ Fill Power – is very high in quality where only the very best goose down is used (probably Hungarian or Canadian geese). It will allow the person a good night’s sleep by allowing ventilation to circulate through and around the pillow thus stabilizing the temperature. However, it can be very expensive to buy. But in my opinion the experience and comfort this pillow brings is worth this extra expense.

By ignoring its deterioration, could allow various allergens to penetrate into its fill, possibly causing future health problems to the user. Our beds should shoulder some of the blame for these problems as if we lie in an awkward way then that could be as a result of a lack of support. Most people will point the finger of blame at our mattress but the mattress is not the only support system we rely on, there are also pillows too.

The role of the pillows is to support the head and neck to make sure that we are comfortable and not lying with an uneven spine. Pillows that are too thin mean our head will be pointed towards the ground putting stress on our neck muscles and our spines to be kept in an awkward shape. A pillow that is too deep will do the same in the opposite direction. What we need to do is choose the right height so that our spine is straight, our head feels supported and we can wake up without a pain in the neck!

Many people will use multiple pillows stacked so you can reach the desired height by adding two or more together. This can all change if you lie on your back or front when you are sleeping. People that lie on their back or front will only need shallow thin pillows so that their head is not bent too far forward or backwards when they are sleeping. Pillow manufacturers make back sleeper and front sleeper specific pillows so you should be able to find a type that suits your preferred position.

The material your pillow is made of and it's filling can affect your quality of sleep too. Some people prefer harder pillows where some others may prefer a softer, lighter pillow. Synthetic materials tend to fill pillows these days as they are light but also dense enough to provide the right level of support. There are still feather or down pillows available and they are still among the softest you can buy although can be a bit expensive.

There are also pillows constructed from memory foam which adapts to your body heat and shapes itself to your head and neck. These can be quite close to your head and so can be quite warm but if you're a cool sleeper or it is winter then these pillows can be perfect.

As well as pillows you'll need a good quality duvet and mattresses that support your back and spine too. Make sure that whether you're after single, double or king size beds that you consider your posture and comfort

For years, I only ever had one set of throw pillows for my home. They matched the furniture on which they sat and they stayed there until I changed furniture. In fact, they probably came with the furniture. Those pillows became invisible. There they sat, day after day, in the same spot doing their same old thing. I took them for granted and did not realize what an opportunity I was missing.

I was not always as conscious of how my home looked, decoratively speaking. I wanted it to be clean, organized and I'm quite obsessed with making sure it smells good - but actually putting my own unique imprint on my living space? I think I just didn't have the time to bother. Between college, career, marriage and children, there were plenty of other things to keep me occupied.

One day, my oldest son - still a toddler at the time - left quite a bright, orange Cheetos stained hand print on a tan throw pillow. First, food - any food - is not allowed to leave my kitchen table in the hands of any of my boys. I have never been made of either money or time and I like to make cleaning as easy as possible so food and drink are only allowed in one room of my house. I am, however, one of those regular mothers with only one pair of eyes. I must admit I wasn't always paying the best of attention and I would suddenly find that one of my little troopers or another had marked their territory with a swipe of grape jelly on the wall or a swish of peanut butter across a piece of furniture. Or, with a Cheetos hand print on my throw pillow.

Grumbling under my breath (which, I admit, happens on occasion), I grabbed the throw pillow and took it to the laundry room. While dabbing the mess from the pillow, I noticed the pillow was really kind of worn. The fabric was wearing thin, the shape was not quite square, and the corded edges were fraying. A quick check of the other home throw pillows confirmed my suspicions. All of my home throw pillows were...old.

Like the story of the mouse asking for a cookie, and then proceeding to hop from one project to another only to come back around to the cookie, I immediately decided I needed new home throw pillows. I resorted to the web to browse options and was simply floored by the endless choices - bright colors, shiny metallics, black and white patterned throw pillows everywhere. There were pillows in stripes, pastels, patterned with flowers or nature prints, circle pillows, bolster pillows, and pillows covered in dots. Yellow pillows, gray pillows, purple pillows and even pillows covered in what looked like shag carpeting.

Within two weeks, not only did I have an entire new set of home throw pillows but I had made a set of pillows for each of my three sons' bedrooms (can you say "manic"?). I found some pillow patterns I liked for special holidays and made some for Christmas - still seven months away, at the time. I now have a collection of home throw pillows stored in a closet under the stairs and if the season changes, if company is coming, or even if the wind is blowing, I will pull out a different set of throw pillows and make a quick and simple change in the look and appearance of my living room or family room.

The boys have grown a bit now and they're even pretty good at helping to clean up. My life can handle a white throw pillow or - gasp - one in shiny silk. I have more rooms in my home for throw pillows than I've ever had before, too. Suddenly, I've discovered my options are endless. Here's where the whole bracelet theory has clicked in. I actually figured out that I was wasting a great opportunity to make quick changes to my rooms to either celebrate a new season, change the overall look of my room, or to decorate for a special holiday. The internet has most certainly made updating my home throw pillows an easy project. Do you know how many inspiring artists are creating beautiful new pillows? Do you know how many free pillow patterns can be found online? There is a wealth of information available. In fact, this year's modern throw pillows have me a bit excited - geometric shapes, bright dots of green on black, yellow stripes with gray swirls. Like a kid at Christmas with stack of presents in front of me, I don't know where to start.

Today, anything goes in your home. We're tired of this economic bubble, downslide, recession, and world-wide finger-pointing. More than ever we need a cheery, comfortable place to land at home. Try adding some new home throw pillows of your own, invite a few friends over and throw a pillow-making party. My Cheetos-stained pillow is a thing of the past. It's time we brighten our living space and hope the world follows.
