When we go to bed what we are unaware of is how our body lies and the movement we make during our sleep can affect how we feel in the morning, after a good night's sleep you feel refreshed, ready to face the new day. A poor night's sleep of constantly waking up and aching can put us firstly, in a bad mood but also create back trouble and other muscular pains that can stick with us for the rest of the day.
Our beds should shoulder some of the blame for these problems as if we lie in an awkward way then that could be as a result of a lack of support. Most people will point the finger of blame at our mattress but the mattress is not the only support system we rely on, there are also pillows too.
The role of the pillows is to support the head and neck to make sure that we are comfortable and not lying with an uneven spine. Pillows that are too thin mean our head will be pointed towards the ground putting stress on our neck muscles and our spines to be kept in an awkward shape. A pillow that is too deep will do the same in the opposite direction. What we need to do is choose the right height so that our spine is straight, our head feels supported and we can wake up without a pain in the neck!
Many people will use multiple pillows stacked so you can reach the desired height by adding two or more together. This can all change if you lie on your back or front when you are sleeping. People that lie on their back or front will only need shallow thin pillows so that their head is not bent too far forward or backwards when they are sleeping. Pillow manufacturers make back sleeper and front sleeper specific pillows so you should be able to find a type that suits your preferred position.
The material your pillow is made of and it's filling can affect your quality of sleep too. Some people prefer harder pillows where some others may prefer a softer, lighter pillow. Synthetic materials tend to fill pillows these days as they are light but also dense enough to provide the right level of support. There are still feather or down pillows available and they are still among the softest you can buy although can be a bit expensive.
There are also pillows constructed from memory foam which adapts to your body heat and shapes itself to your head and neck. These can be quite close to your head and so can be quite warm but if you're a cool sleeper or it is winter then these pillows can be perfect.
As well as pillows you'll need a good quality duvet and mattresses that support your back and spine too. Make sure that whether you're after single, double or king size beds that you consider your posture and comfort
