Chenille is French for caterpillar and describes the method in which the fabric is made, unlike other fabrics like wool which describe the actual fiber itself. A basic fabric called chenille was first produced in the 18th century however it really come into its own until the 1920s and 30s when embroidered hand-tufted bedspreads from a small town in northern Georgia gained in popularity. Chenille may be made from cotton, rayon, acrylic and other fibers. Very lightweight, people love the soft feel of the chenille fabric which is one reason it is often used for baby items such as crib liners and blankets. The qualities of this fabric make it good for baby items as well as they can snuggle in the soft blankets. Many people give these items at baby showers as they are appreciated by both the parents and baby.
Another look of chenille often seen is used in quilting for a casual country look. This is known as a rag quilt
